On bigger works I make a companion illustrated storyboard. This is the space I take notes, write down my thoughts about the drawing and it's meaning, and just let me mind stay in the creative mode. These are deeply personal but I am sure you will find them relatable and moving. I love these gems that come from my studio. It is my way of making art, while making art, while making art.
Compainion Drawing:Gosh this one was delicious to make. Starting with the most perfect shape, the square, to the color palette, to the subjects, everything about this piece feels spot on for me.
I love the reactions I have received from viewers as they see it in person. My favorite is how much folks love the balance present in this piece even though it goes against all the rules. Those three little dots? They are holding the whole left side of this drawing with confidence.
As I approach a drawing I know my subconscious is always working to make sure everything is flowing together, but truly these illustrations create themselves. More and more I feel like I am just the body translating the ideas floating around us all into art. @elizabeth_gilbert_writer talks about this concept in “Big Magic” and I believe it!
Whatever makes these come together so beautifully, I am enjoying the decadence of creating them and appreciating the final drawing when I am done.
